Trenton’s Law

On May 9, 2023, our entire world — along with our family and community — was forever changed by a preventable tragedy. A driver with substances in his system, a long criminal history, including vehicular homicide and numerous traffic violations, was driving recklessly at 113 MPH in a 45 MPH zone, traveling in the wrong direction, when he struck our son head-on. In one irreversible moment, his life and all of his dreams were taken, and the lives of so many others were changed forever by one irresponsible decision.

After Trenton’s death, our family was devastated to learn that Florida law did not provide enhanced sentencing for repeat vehicular homicide or DUI manslaughter offenders. Despite prior convictions, repeat offenders could be sentenced without significantly increased penalties. We knew meaningful change was necessary.

Working alongside dedicated legislators, we helped introduce Trenton’s Law to strengthen penalties and hold repeat offenders accountable.

Signed into Florida law on June 5, 2025, and effective October 1, 2025, Trenton’s Law increases penalties for repeat offenders convicted of DUI manslaughter, BUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and vessel homicide. The law elevates these repeat offenses to first-degree felonies, increasing the maximum possible prison sentence from 15 years to 30 years.

The law also makes refusal to submit to DUI toxicology testing (breath, blood, or urine) a criminal offense, which may result in jail time, financial penalties, and a permanent criminal record.

Trenton’s Law was created to hold repeat offenders accountable and to help protect lives on Florida’s roads and waterways. Through this legislation, Trenton’s legacy is helping save lives and create safer communities.
